This strategy mainly used in everyday communication and interaction. This research used qualitative resarch and aimed to find what are politeness strategies used by the member of Student Youth Community (SYC). This research conducted in Widya Gama University with 15 members of SYC who involved as the research subject. The result of this research showed that there are four strategies used by the Members of SYC. They are bald on record, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. From 277 utterances, 116 utterances of them recognized as bald on record (42%), 110 utterances as positive politeness (40%), 18 utterances as negative politeness (6%), and 33 utterances as off record (12%). Therefore, it can be concluded that bald on record as the dominated strategy that used by the members of SYC. This research is intended to identify the students’ ability in reading English. The main objective of this research is to recognize whether there is significant correlation between student’s reading habit in English and students’ reading comprehension ability identified through the use of students’ habit questionnaire and reading test with the text was took from passage in TOEFL test. These subjects who are involved at this research are second semester of English Department in Widya Gama Mahakam Samarinda University. This research used quantitative research method. The research design of this study is correlational study. Reading test and questionnaire were used as the instruments; it was used to find out students reading comprehension (variable Y) and students reading habit (variable X) in order to get the data. Moreover, this research used simple random sampling technique. Population of this research was the second semester of English Department in Widya Gama Mahakam Samarinda. The researcher took 38 students as the sample. In this study the researcher computed the normality test to measure the data have a normal distribution and linearity test to measure the data is linear. The data was analyzed using product moment correlation coefficient by SPSS version 22. The result of this research is 0.657. From the result of this research is 0.657 was higher than the significant degree 0.05 at Sig. (2-tailed). The research design of this study is descriptive study. The researcher used interview as the instruments. The participants in this study were teachers of SMK Negeri 5 Samarinda and the researcher took three teachers. The research used purpose sampling technique. In this research the data collection techniques is using interviews to find out the types of teacher talk and the reasons for the teacher used teacher talk. The findings showed that there are three teachers talk used by teacher such as asking question, lecturing and giving direction. Nevertheless, there are three main reasons for the teacher used the teacher talk such as students’ language ability, students’ motivation and students’ participation.</p> 2019-01-03T15:22:12+07:00 Copyright (c) 2019 BORJU:Borneo Educational Journal Teachers’ Strategies in responding students’ Minor Misbehavior (a Case Study in SMP Negeri 26 Samarinda) 2019-06-25T11:36:27+07:00 Siti Halimah Rinda Fitriana Ariyanti Ariyanti <p>This Study aimed to find out: (1) What students’ minor misbehavior appears in the classroom? (2) What strategies do teachers use to response the students’ minor misbehavior? This research used a qualitative study with case study design. The study involved the English teacher, 7th and 8th grade students on SMPN 26 Samarinda. Data were collected by observation class. To check the reliability of the data, triangulation was also used in this research. The researcher compared the accrued information with different relevant researchers and consulted the lectures implicated in the study. </p><p>The findings showed that the common students' minor misbehavior that appeared in the class were: talking each other, clowning around, drumming, tapping a pen, sleeping, and daydreaming. Moreover, to responding the misbehavior, the teacher used a various strategy that were: ignoring, reminder in soft voice, calling on the student, public rule reminder, the look, facial expression, proximity and warning the consequence.</p> 2019-01-03T15:22:12+07:00 Copyright (c) 2019 BORJU:Borneo Educational Journal Teachers’ Strategies in Managing a Large Class in Teaching English at SMP Negeri 01 Tanjung Selor 2019-06-25T11:36:27+07:00 Trimar Keristiana Arbain Arbain Rinda Fitriana <p>Classroom management is an important concern for every teacher in making effective setting classroom in schools holds students together and offers them opportunity to achieving their goals in learning process especially in large classes with to much numbers of students. This research applied qualitative research. The subject of this research were the teacher’s and students of SMP NEGERI 01 Tanjung Selor. The researcher conducted interview to collect the data. The researcher did some steps to analyze the data, namely; data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing.</p><p>The result of this research showed that teachers mostly organize students into group during lesson, walk around classroom to check students work, set particular seating arrangement, address misbehavior and using variety of teaching method such as discussion, group work and group project to make students active during class. In addition, students’ perception has significant relationship between teachers’ strategies and student’s performance in learning English. The finding also showed that teachers has positive strategies in managing their class and the students enjoyed the method used by teachers during English lesson.</p> 2019-01-03T15:22:12+07:00 Copyright (c) 2019 BORJU:Borneo Educational Journal The Effect of The Use of Video on English Vocabulary Mastery of The Elementary Second Level Students at SDN 018 Samarinda 2019-06-25T11:36:27+07:00 Widi Syahtia Pane Godefridus Bali Geroda Vocabulary is one of language components that plays an important role in communication. Through vocabulary, students can develop the four skills in English language such as listening, reading, writing, and speaking. There are many ways in teaching vocabulary and increasing vocabulary mastery. In this study, the writer used video as a technique. In this study, the writer wants to found out that has any significant effect of the use of Video on English vocabulary mastery of the elementary second level students at SDN 018 Samarinda.The design of this study was pre-experimental design. The writer gave pre-test, treatment, and post-test to one group. The sample of this study was 30 students of the elementary second level students at SDN 018 Samarinda. In analyzing data, the writer used t-test to find out the significance difference between the result before treatment (pre-test) and after treatment (post-test).In pre-test, from 30 students, 7 students got A (excellent), 6 students got B (good), 7 students got C (fair), 6 students got D (poor), and 4 students got E (fail). In post-test, from 30 students, 13 students got A (excellent), 8 students got B (good), 8 students got C (fair), 1 student got D (poor), and no students got E (fail). The mean score of vocabulary before treatment (pre-test) was fair (67,7) and the mean score of vocabulary after treatment (post-test) was good (78,7). The result of the findings of the study showed t-count (6.358) is greater ( ˃ ) than t-table (2.045) at level of significant (p) = 5% and df = 29. It means the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. However most of students still believe that mathematics is difficult lesson to learn. Relating to this issue, the researcher conducted a qualitative research to describe the difficulties encountered by students when learning Mathematics. To collect the data, the researcher applied observation, interview, and documentation. The data was then analyzed through data reduction, data display and conclusion.</p><p> </p><p>Having analyzed the data, it can be concluded that students’ difficulties in learning Mathematics came from teacher’s techniques in explaining the lesson, inadequate school’s facilities and infrastructure, family environment, and curriculum. Hence, it is suggested to teachers to apply teaching techniques based on theory of mathematics learning, and enriched with learning aids to encourage students’ motivation and positive attitude. This research was conducted in 73 elementary schools in Kutai Kartanegara Regency. The method used in this study is a quantitative method with multiple regression analysis. The study sample was two hundred eighty two teachers from nine hundred and fifty-five populations. The results of this study explain that decision making plays a good role in the effectiveness of school management.
